'Stargazy Pie for Tea’ is a representation of the fishing village harbour at Mousehole, in Cornwall. There are different parts to this piece, the sky so fluid and bold, working in tune with the sea, painted with my fingers. I spent deliberate time on the village houses and harbour wall. It has that sense of time, perseverance and resilience. Each home has it's own history and relevance. They feel as though they have earned their special place overlooking the harbour. As I moved to the boats, there was a sense of privacy and honour, every boat has a story, or a secret, to tell. They have each travelled a spectrum of harsh winters and beautiful blue seas with purpose. Legend has it, Stargazy Pie was created in Mousehole, in honour of a brave fisherman from the 16th century, called Tom Bawcock. It is said that Tom sailed out into a violent stormy sea to fish when the village was facing starvation. He returned with an abundance of fish which was made into a pie, with their heads poking through the pastry crust, as if gazing at the stars! This was shared among the townsfolk, saving them from famine! Bravery, resilience and love is what 'Stargazy Pie for Tea' is all about.
